Outdoor Outlets Done Right: A NYC Homeowner's Summer Electrical Guide
Summer in the city means the backyard, the roof deck, or the brownstone garden finally gets used. String lights over the patio, a little fountain, a window AC humming in the bedroom, maybe a projector for movie night. The problem is that a lot of NYC homes were wired long before anyone plugged that much into an outdoor space — so people improvise. Usually that means an indoor extension cord snaking out a window. Here's how to do it right instead, and why the code rules exist.
Why outdoor outlets legally need GFCI protection
A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) senses when electricity is leaking to ground — for example, through a wet cord or through a person — and shuts off in a fraction of a second. Water plus electricity is exactly the scenario GFCIs are built for, which is why outdoor outlets are required to have them.
New York City adopted an updated Electrical Code — based on the 2020 National Electrical Code with local amendments — that took full effect in December 2025, per the NYC Department of Buildings. Under the NEC, outdoor outlets at dwellings on ordinary household circuits must be GFCI-protected. Protection can come from a GFCI receptacle or a GFCI breaker at the panel. If you have an old outdoor outlet with no test/reset buttons and no GFCI breaker, treat it as unprotected.
Weatherproof covers and WR receptacles — the details that matter
An indoor-style outlet outdoors is a problem even with a GFCI. Two code requirements address this:
- Weather-resistant (WR) receptacles. Standard 15- and 20-amp outdoor receptacles must be a listed weather-resistant type — built to handle moisture and temperature swings. Look for "WR" stamped on the face.
- "In-use" (bubble) covers. In a wet location, the enclosure must stay weatherproof even while something is plugged in. That's the bubble-shaped cover that closes over the plug. For these outlet-box hoods the code calls for a listed "extra duty" cover — the flat flip-up cover that only seals when nothing is plugged in doesn't cut it for a wet spot.
On a roof deck or an open patio, "wet location" is the realistic assumption. These are inexpensive parts; the issue is almost always that no one installed them.
The extension-cord-out-the-window problem
Running an indoor extension cord out a window is the single most common — and worst — outdoor setup we see. Indoor cords aren't rated for sun, rain, or foot traffic; a pinched window sash chews through insulation; and there's no GFCI in the path. Daisy-chaining a fountain, string lights, and a fan off one cord also overloads it.
The right fix is a dedicated outdoor circuit: a properly rated, GFCI-protected outlet mounted where you actually need power, on wiring meant to live outside. In a brownstone that can mean running a new circuit from the panel to the garden; on a small NYC lot the run is often short and clean. If your panel is already full or dated, that's a separate conversation worth having with a licensed electrician.
Outdoor and landscape lighting, done right
String lights and path lighting are the easiest summer win and the easiest to botch. A few ground rules:
- Use fixtures and cords rated for outdoor/wet or damp locations — not repurposed indoor lights.
- Power low-voltage landscape lighting from a proper outdoor-rated transformer, not an indoor plug strip left outside.
- Feed everything from a GFCI-protected outlet with an in-use cover, not a cord run under the door.

A quick word on pools, spas, and fountains
Backyard pools and permanent fountains carry an extra requirement most homeowners never hear about: equipotential bonding. The code requires metal parts and the surrounding area to be tied together so there's no dangerous voltage difference near the water. This is not DIY territory — if you're adding a pool, spa, or a permanently installed fountain, have a licensed electrician handle the bonding and circuits.
Window AC units and overloaded old circuits
NYC summer means window AC units, and in older homes they're the classic overload. A 5,000–12,000 BTU unit draws real current, and if it shares a circuit with lights, a TV, and phone chargers on decades-old wiring, you get tripped breakers, warm cords, or worse. Signs to take seriously: a breaker that trips when the AC kicks on, a warm or discolored outlet, or lights that dim on startup. The answer is usually a dedicated circuit for the AC — and if your wiring is original, it may be time to look at electrical repairs & inspections.
Powering an outdoor space safely comes down to a few things: GFCI protection, weather-rated parts, and a real circuit instead of a cord out the window.
