Why Your New LED Lights Flicker on the Old Dimmer — and How a NYC Electrician Fixes It
Your new LED fixtures buzz at half brightness, strobe on the way down, or snap off at 40% instead of fading to a candle glow. The instinct is to blame the bulbs. Usually they're fine — the dimmer on your wall is from a different era of electricity, fighting the driver inside the new fixture.
A dimmer doesn't lower the voltage — it chops the wave
Wall dimmers are phase-cut devices: they switch off part of each AC half-cycle to cut the average power delivered. Two flavors:
- Forward phase (leading edge, TRIAC) — cuts the front of each half-cycle. The classic dimmer on NYC walls for decades, designed around incandescent bulbs.
- Reverse phase (trailing edge, often labeled ELV) — cuts the back end instead, gentler on electronic loads.
An incandescent filament doesn't much care: it's hot, it coasts through the chopped gaps, and your eye sees a smooth fade. An LED has no filament — it has a driver, a small power supply that has to make sense of a mangled waveform and still deliver steady current. When driver and dimmer disagree about that waveform, you get buzz, strobe, flash-on-startup, or a dead band at the bottom.
Your old dimmer and your new LEDs were never designed to meet
The industry's basic-compatibility standard for phase-cut dimming of LEDs, NEMA SSL 7A, is written around forward phase-cut dimmers paired with dimmable LED light engines — new products qualified against each other. It says nothing about the dimmer already in your wall, which was probably made before the LED you just bought existed. That's why manufacturers publish compatibility lists model by model.
"Dimmable LED" on the box means the bulb dims with something. Not necessarily with the device in your wall.
Too much load and too little load both cause flicker
- Overloaded. LEDs draw inrush current and have power-factor behavior incandescents don't, so the incandescent rating doesn't carry over. The common trade rule of thumb is to divide it by ten — roughly 60W of LED on a 600W incandescent-rated dimmer — but treat that as a sanity check. Dimmers print a separate LED/CFL rating, and that number governs.
- Under-loaded. A load below the dimmer's minimum rated load flickers at the bottom of the range, drops out near zero, or won't turn on at all — exactly what happens when six 60-watt incandescents become six 8-watt LEDs. Many quality dimmers have a low-end trim that fixes this in the field.
The neutral wire, and why NYC walls make it a question
A dimmer needs power for its own electronics. A non-neutral (two-wire) model gets it by trickling a small current through the fixture itself — harmless to a hot filament, but enough to make a low-wattage LED glow faintly, flicker, or misbehave near the bottom of the dial. A dimmer wired to a neutral doesn't borrow from the load, which is why manufacturers generally steer LED jobs to their neutral-required models.
The NYC catch: in plenty of prewar apartments and brownstones, the switch box has a hot and a switch leg and no neutral, and getting one there means fishing cable through plaster, brick, or a ceiling you'd rather not open. Sometimes there's an easy path from a nearby box; sometimes the answer is a non-neutral dimmer picked for your driver, or rewiring that run while other work is open.
Once new cable gets pulled, this is filed electrical work — in NYC, a licensed master electrician filing through DOB NOW under the 2025 NYC Electrical Code, the 2020 NEC plus city amendments, in force since December 21, 2025. Flicker you can't consciously see still counts
Flicker is a health question, not just an annoyance — that's the premise of IEEE 1789-2015, "Recommended Practices for Modulating Current in High-Brightness LEDs for Mitigating Health Risks to Viewers." Deeper modulation at lower frequency means more risk, and that is what a cheap driver on a mismatched dimmer produces.
Per the Department of Energy's solid-state lighting program, visible flicker lives roughly between 3 and 80 Hz; stroboscopic effects — a stutter on a moving hand or fan blade — start around 80 Hz and have been measured well above 1000 Hz. Light modulation has been linked to headaches, eyestrain and migraine, and in rare cases to seizures in people with photosensitive epilepsy. "I can't see it flickering" isn't the end of the test.
How a NYC electrician fixes it
- Identify what the fixture wants — forward phase, reverse phase/ELV, or 0-10V — from the manufacturer's compatibility list, not the shelf tag.
- Add up the real LED wattage and check it against the dimmer's printed LED rating and its minimum load.
- Match the dimmer to the driver, favoring a neutral-based model where a neutral exists.
- Set the low-end trim so fixtures fade smoothly instead of dropping out.
- Test the whole run at every level, including 3-way locations and anything else on the device; one non-dimmable fixture takes down the rest.
