Wiring for an Electric or Induction Range in a NYC Home: What Gas-to-Electric Conversions Actually Require

More NYC homeowners are swapping gas stoves for electric or induction. The cooking is faster, the air quality is better, and for new construction the city is already headed that way. But there's a catch people rarely hear until the electrician shows up: your old gas kitchen almost certainly isn't wired for it. Here's what the job actually involves.

Your gas stove barely uses electricity — your new range needs a lot

A gas range only needs a standard 120-volt outlet to run the igniter, clock, and light. That's it. An electric or induction range is a different animal: it pulls serious power and needs its own dedicated 240-volt circuit running back to your electrical panel.

How much power depends on the appliance:

  • Standard electric ranges commonly run on a 40-amp, 240-volt circuit (delivering up to roughly 9,600 watts).
  • Larger or high-end ranges — big ovens, lots of elements — often call for a 50-amp circuit (up to roughly 12,000 watts).
  • Induction cooktops and ranges also need a dedicated 240V circuit: many 30-inch models spec 40A, while 36-inch and premium units often want 50A.

These are typical figures, not gospel. Always check the appliance's nameplate or install manual — the manufacturer's stated breaker and wire size is what governs the install, and it can differ from the general rule of thumb.

Why a new circuit has to be run

The 120V outlet behind your gas stove can't be reused for this. A 240V range circuit uses heavier wire (commonly 8-gauge copper for 40A, 6-gauge for 50A), a double-pole breaker, and its own home run back to the panel. It also has to be dedicated — nothing else shares that line.

In an older NYC apartment or house that was only ever set up for gas cooking, none of that exists yet. So the work is a genuine new circuit: fishing cable from the kitchen to the panel, landing a new breaker, and installing either a receptacle or a hardwire connection. In finished walls that can mean some rewiring and patching along the path.

Receptacle or hardwire

Freestanding ranges usually plug into a wall receptacle — commonly a NEMA 14-50 (the same 50A four-prong outlet many EV chargers use). Older homes sometimes have the three-prong NEMA 10-50, but new installs use the four-wire type. Under the electrical code, a 50A-rated receptacle like a 14-50 is even permitted on a 40A circuit for a fixed cooking appliance, which is why you'll see it paired either way.

Built-in cooktops and many induction units are hardwired instead — connected directly, no plug. Your appliance's manual will tell you which it expects.

The part that surprises people: your panel

This is where a straightforward swap can turn into a bigger project. Many older NYC homes still have a 100-amp service. Add a 40A or 50A range to a panel that's already carrying an air conditioner, and maybe a dryer, EV charger, or heat pump you're also adding, and you can run out of capacity.

A licensed electrician runs a load calculation to check whether your existing service can safely carry the new range. If it can't — or your panel has no open breaker spaces — you may need a panel upgrade (often to 200A) before the range can go in. It's better to find this out during the estimate than after the appliance is delivered.

Permits and inspection — this is NYC

Electrical work in New York City is not DIY. Installing a new circuit requires a DOB electrical permit, and the work must be performed by a NYC-licensed electrician (a Licensed Master Electrician's permit). Filings go through DOB NOW, and the completed work has to pass a DOB electrical inspection — electricians can't self-certify it. That inspection is what protects you: it confirms the circuit, wire, and breaker are sized and installed to code.

The bigger picture

If you're converting from gas, the range is often just one piece. Local Law 154 already requires all-electric appliances in most new NYC construction and gut renovations (1- and 2-family homes and buildings under seven stories since January 1, 2024). Existing homes aren't forced to convert — but many owners are choosing to, and once you're pulling one new 240V circuit, it's worth planning for the others (dryer, heat pump, EV charging) at the same time so you size the panel once.
