Dedicated Circuits Explained: Which NYC Appliances Need Their Own Line

If your microwave dims the lights or your space heater keeps tripping the breaker, you're not imagining it — you're overloading a shared circuit. The fix is usually a "dedicated circuit": a wire run from your panel that feeds one appliance and nothing else. In NYC's older brownstones and pre-war apartments, where wiring was often laid out long before modern appliances existed, missing dedicated circuits are one of the most common problems we find. Here's what needs its own line, why sharing causes trouble, and what the code actually requires.

What a dedicated circuit is — and why sharing trips breakers

A standard branch circuit can feed several outlets across a room. A dedicated circuit runs from a single breaker straight to one appliance, with no other outlets or lights tapped off it.

The reason high-draw appliances need their own line comes down to a rule in the National Electrical Code (NEC): a circuit serving a continuous load (one that runs three hours or more) has to be sized so that load is no more than 80% of the circuit's rating. So a 20-amp circuit is really only good for about 16 amps of steady load. Add a 1,500-watt space heater (roughly 12.5 amps) to a circuit already running a TV and a few lamps, and you blow past that ceiling — the breaker does its job and trips. That's not a malfunction; it's the breaker protecting the wiring from overheating.

Frequent tripping is a warning sign, not a nuisance to be reset. The cheap "fix" — swapping in a bigger breaker — is dangerous, because the wire behind the wall isn't rated for the higher current. The correct fix is a dedicated circuit sized for the load.

Appliances that need their own circuit

Some of these are required by code; others are strongly recommended by manufacturers and good practice. In general:

  • Electric range / oven — a heavy 240-volt dedicated circuit (often 40–50 amps). Always its own line.
  • Electric clothes dryer — a dedicated 240-volt, 30-amp circuit wired with 10-gauge copper. Never shared.
  • Microwave — most over-the-range and built-in units call for a dedicated 20-amp circuit in their install instructions, even where code doesn't name the microwave specifically.
  • Refrigerator — code doesn't mandate a separate line in every case, but a dedicated circuit is good practice so a tripped breaker elsewhere doesn't quietly thaw your freezer.
  • Dishwasher and garbage disposal — typically dedicated; there's a limit to how much fixed equipment you can pile onto a shared circuit.
  • Window or wall air conditioners — a large unit can dominate a circuit; a dedicated line prevents summer trips.
  • EV chargers — required to be on their own circuit (more below).
  • Permanent space heaters / baseboard heat — high, steady draw makes a dedicated circuit essential.

Portable space heaters are the sneaky one. They're not "installed," so nobody runs a dedicated line for them — yet at 1,500 watts they'll overload almost any shared outlet circuit. If you lean on one every winter, that outlet deserves its own circuit.

What the NYC Electrical Code requires

NYC enforces its own electrical code, and it just got a major overhaul: the 2025 NYC Electrical Code (based on the 2020 NEC with local amendments) applies to work filed on or after December 21, 2025. That's a big jump from the prior code, which the city adopted back in 2011 and was based on the much older 2008 NEC. Key requirements that drive dedicated and near-dedicated circuits in homes:

  • Kitchens need at least two 20-amp small-appliance circuits for countertop outlets, so a toaster and a coffee maker don't fight over one line.
  • Laundry areas require a dedicated 20-amp circuit with no other outlets, and bathrooms require their own 20-amp receptacle circuit.
  • EV charging equipment is treated as a continuous load and must sit on its own individual branch circuit serving no other loads, with the breaker and wiring sized at no less than 125% of the charger's load (per NEC Article 625) — which is why a 50-amp charger needs hefty wiring and its own breaker.

Crucially, in New York City this work isn't DIY. Electrical permits can only be filed by a NYC-licensed master electrician, and the job is inspected and signed off through the Department of Buildings — electricians can't self-certify their own work. Adding circuits to an older NYC panel often also surfaces a bigger question: whether the panel itself has room and capacity, which can point toward a panel upgrade.

When to call a pro

Treat these as red flags worth a professional look:

  1. A breaker that trips repeatedly on the same appliance.
  2. Lights that dim when the microwave, AC, or dryer kicks on.
  3. Warm outlets, warm cover plates, or a faint burning smell.
  4. Reaching for a power strip to run a heater or AC.
